It was an ambitious project that took nearly 15 years to come to fruition. But through the vision and persistence of a deeply committed board and administration, the all new Jersey City Medical Center Campus opened its doors in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty on the Hudson River waterfront.
Jersey City Medical Center is New Jersey’s largest provider of healthcare services for the poor. Its facilities had become worn, outdated and inefficient. Despite the apparent need, many said the new medical center campus would never be more than just a dream.
For decades, Jersey City Medical Center was a public institution. After privatizing in 1988, the organization’s fledgling fund raising program took its start. Led by William Dauster, Senior Vice President of the Liberty HealthCare Foundation, the first capital campaign in the organization’s history was announced in the lobby of the new Medical Center. At this kick off, it was reported that the campaign had secured a cadre of extraordinary leadership gifts of the size never before received by a non-profit in Hudson County. These gifts included a $2.5 million commitment from Alan Wilzig and the Trust Company of New Jersey, a $1 million gift from the Provident Bank Foundation, a $750,000 grant from the Rippel Foundation and the capstone, a $650,000 Kresge Challenge Grant awarded in September 2003.
Through the efforts of GSI’s Howard Siegel, LibertyHealth System raised and extraordinary $12 million. GSI congratulates the LHS family for their history-making achievement and record-setting capital campaign. We are proud to have served in partnership with the Health System’s leadership, providing on-site campaign direction and consultation.
