CHILDREN'S SPECIALIZED HOSPITAL
"It`s all about the kids for us"
"I notice the kids we care for everyday here," said Phil Salerno, thoughtfully. Mr. Salerno is President and Chief Development Officer of PSE&G Children`s Specialized Hospital Foundation, and one of the architects of The Building Begins With Children, the most ambitious campaign in the hospital`s history. "You can`t help but be significantly impacted...your heart breaks for them, but at the same time you are energized and excited by the progress they make, the inspiring effort they put forth...you want to do anything you possibly can for these kids."
The Building Begins With Children campaign concluded as the most successful fund raising effort in the history of PSE&G Children`s Specialized Hospital and significantly exceeded initial expectations.
Surpassing the $30 million goal was driven by the largest gifts ever received from an individual, a corporation and a foundation - each at the seven-figure level, the first such gifts in the history of the hospital or the Foundation. The campaign`s landmark was the $5 million naming gift from PSE&G, the largest gift in the history of Children`s Specialized Hospital. It is also one of the largest gifts to a healthcare institution in New Jersey philanthropic history and one which equaled the largest commitment to a healthcare institution by a corporation in New Jersey. It is the largest charitable gift ever made by PSE&G.
Other fund raising highlights included the third grant awarded to Children`s Specialized by the Kresge Foundation ($1 million). This campaign included the first organized solicitation of Children`s Specialized`s employees resulting in approximately $300,000 in commitments. It also marked receipt of the largest gifts ever made by traditional supporters of the hospital - foundations, corporations and individuals, especially board members. Exceptional was the number of six-figure gifts made by trustees, six, as compared to the one pledged at this level during the last campaign.
In summary, the early results enabled the campaign goal to be set at $31 million - 50% higher than the initial working target of $20 million and 20% higher than the desired $25 million that was tested in the campaign planning study.
"This new infrastructure of combining acute care, rehabilitation and research is critical to providing the best services for our patients," said Amy B. Mansue, President and Chief Executive Officer for Children`s Specialized Hospital at the dedication of the new facility. "We interviewed hundreds of people: nurses, physicians, patients` families and incorporated all of their best ideas into this new hospital. It`s all about the kids for us and creating this new healthcare campus has forever changed the way we provide care to our patients."

In January of 2007, GSI presented the results of a campaign planning study for Monadnock Community Hospital (MCH) in Peterborough, New Hampshire, which determined that MCH had the upside potential to raise $8.6 million - or more than three times what the Hospital had ever raised before. Laura Gingras, MCH`s Vice President of Philanthropy and Community Relations, was ecstatic!
